About this service
Working closely with other providers in the area, we offer support for carers – along with their families – living in Cumberland. We look to provide support for young carers (aged 18 and below) and parent carers (a parent or other primary caregiver who provides ongoing, substantial support and care to a child or young person with additional needs).
Using a whole family approach, the service is designed to ensure that young carers and parent carers are identified well, given the support they need – when they need it – and are enabled to thrive.
More Information
As part of the carers support service in Cumberland, we are here to provide quality support for Cumberland’s young carers (those aged 18 and under who have caring responsibilities for an adult) and parent carers (a parent or other primary caregiver who provides ongoing, substantial support and care to a child or young person with additional needs).
Adult carers are supported by People First.
Young Carers
Young Carers are children or young people (under 18) that provide care for someone who may be unwell (mentally or physically), has a disability, or a difficulty with drugs or alcohol.
We help to identify young carers who have an excessive or inappropriate caring role, and offer Young Carer Needs assessments. This helps us to tailor support and look at how best we can reduce the caring they do. The young carer will have access to peer support groups, targeted activities that promote inclusion to youth and community services, and online resources to help connect and reduce feelings of isolation.
Support for young carers is offered through a range of methods, with young carers always having a voice in co-producing their service.

Parent carers
Parent carers provide support to children who would not be able to manage well with-out their help. This can include children who are now adults. The child/adult may have mental health concerns, be ill or be disabled.
Parent carers will be supported through signposting, information and advice, and can also join peer networks to share experiences and get advice. The service is designed to help improve wellbeing in areas like relationships, health, safety and confidence building.
